Stephen J. Mcarthur

October 9, 1945 — May 16, 2017

Stephen J. McArthur, 71, of Alexander, succumbed to cancer at his home surrounded by his family on May 16, 2017. He was born on October 9, 1945, in Warsaw, NY, to the late John and Margaret (Meeder) McArthur.

“Are you ever going to amount to anything?” Many are still searching for an answer to Steve’s favorite question.

Steve was truly a selfless man who dedicated his life to his family—a loving husband to Donna his wife of 51 years; an exceptional father and role model to his two daughters; and an adoring grandfather to his grandchildren. In order to spend more time with his family Steve retired from Norfolk Southern in 2006 after 42 years of service as a signalman in the railroad industry. He was fortunate to turn his childhood love of trains into a career that he enjoyed every day and freely shared this passion with others. In his early years, Steve enjoyed playing sports, baseball and wrestling. He volunteered many years with the Tri-Town Youth Athletics as a softball coach and board member and mentored many young athletes. Later, he would be his grandchildren’s biggest fan and would frequently be found watching them play sports, dance, sing, cheer, and play music—even if it meant a plane ride to get there. Steve also enjoyed a good western movie (and a few bad ones), coin collecting, and a good debate. Helping friends, extended family, and sometimes strangers was always a priority. Steve was a proud U.S. Army Veteran.

Steve is survived by his wife, Donna, daughters Wendy McArthur (Robert Moon) of Cumming, GA and Jenifer (Jason) Dean of Alexander; siblings Thomas (Glenda) McArthur of Valrico, FL and Judy (Keith) Rowe of Warsaw, NY; 5 loving grandchildren Devin, Lucy, Zachary, Cole & Margo, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by siblings Donald McArthur and Eileen Moyer.

A special thank you to Steve’s longtime friends and dedicated family members who never wavered in their support and to Homecare & Hospice of Genesee County for their care.
