James Jude Kaney, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24th, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, on November 23rd, 1944, James lived a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
A proud graduate of the University of Maryland, Jim was an ardent supporter of their athletic programs.
Jim honorably served in the United States Navy, where he had the distinguished role of serving on the honor guard detail for President Kennedy's gravesite and the dinner detail for President Lyndon B. Johnson. His service was a testament to his devotion to his country.
Jim was a member of SS Joachim & Anne Parish in Varysburg NY for many years. He was a longtime Buffalo Bills season-ticket holder, traveling to all 4 Bills Super Bowls as well as many away games. Jim also found joy and fulfillment in local community theatre as an actor and director for numerous productions
Jim lived life to the fullest, traveling extensively with his wife, Susan M. Mucha Kaney, whom he married on August 29, 1968. He had a zest for adventure, enjoying activities such as sailing, scuba diving, and horseback riding, and he was an exceptional cook with a love for grilling.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his daughter, Mary Catherine (Stephen) Geller of North Java; his son, Michael Q. Kaney of Warsaw; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Michael James Kaney and Mary Elizabeth McFadden Kaney, as well as his brother, Jude Kaney.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation from 10 am to 11 am on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025, at SS. Joachim and Anne - St. Joseph's Worship Site, 2311 Route 98, Varysburg. His Funeral Mass will immediately follow visitation at 11 am. He will be laid to rest, with military honors, in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Varysburg Volunteer Fire Department, 2446 Main St., Varysburg, NY 14167, in James' memory.
