Attica - Reverend Charles Francis Williman, 93 of Attica passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw.
Rev. Williman was born January 28, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a son of the late Francis and Marion (Forrest) Williman.
Charles graduated from high school in 1949, and went on to attend Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, graduating in 1953. He furthered his education at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1956. Shortly after graduating, on June 17, 1956, Rev. Williman was ordained at Emmanuel Church in Bridesburg, Pennsylvania.
Rev. Williman was honored to have served the following churches as pastor: The Wapwallopen Charge (June 1956 December 1961); St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Lionville, Pennsylvania (January 1962 - May 1969); St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Attica, New York (May 1969 - June 1998). The title of Pastor Emeritus was bestowed upon him at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Attica in May 2002.
Throughout his ministry, Charles was active in many activities with the United Church of Christ Conference and Association: Chairperson of the Lay Life and Work in Pennsylvania, South East Conference. In New York he served with just about every committee and department from 1969-2005. He was Moderator of Western Association from 1977 to 1978; and was Conference Nominating Committee Delegate to the General Synod two times.
Charles involvement in the community was not just through the church. Over the years he served on the Stevens Memorial Library Board for 25 years, including 15 as President; he was instrumental in forming the Visitor's Center at Attica Correctional Facility. He served as President of Community Action of Wyoming County from 1998 to 2000; the board of the Attica Area Chamber of Commerce for a dozen years, including two as President; he was the Convener of the Attica Clergy Fellowship for over 20 years; and he served as a member and President of the Attica Lions Club where he was honored with the Lion of the Year Award.
Charles' married the late Florence Marie White on May 22, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were blessed to be married for 69 years, and together they raised five children: David (Jude) of Attica, Marie Lowe of Attica, Jean (Ralph) Wirth of Varysburg, Susan (David) McPherson of Varysburg, and Ruth (late Mark) Hopfinger of Attica. Charles was Pop-Pop to 13 grandchildren: Serena French, Stephanie Brazis, Jennifer (Chris) Eddy, Michael (Heather) Brazis, Nicole (Marty) Breedlove, Ryan Bolton, Rebecca (Jeff) Peters, Christine (Justin) Kipfer, Danielle (Chris) Perry, Kathryn McPherson, Lena (Aaron) Donahue, Emma (Zach) Duffy, and Anna Hopfinger; and 24 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Rev. Williman is reunited in death with the love of his life, his wife, Florence (White), parents, Francis and Marion Williman; a sister, brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call on Friday (October 3, 2025) from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home, 135 Main Street in Attica. Rev. Williman's Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (October 4, 2025) at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 11 Washington Street in Attica. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in Forest Hill Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to either St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 11 Washington Street or Stevens Memorial Library, 146 Main Street both in Attica, New York 14011.
